CHAPTER: IV




For chapter IV, the implementation and further development of idea from previous chapters are being implemented onto the existed site for the first time. The aim is to create a narrative that would describe and convey the proposed environmental condition; to create an urban wooded environment.

The urban scenarios of the project are depicted into four separated diagram which convey the reverence of the project in different time scale.


Urban Scenario 1 - Reintroduction and Recovering (Stop-time)
Past processes such as saw milling and canal transportation method are revived in order to preserve and reinvigorate the area. However, the reintroduced processes come with several requirements and related processes such as raw log storage and drying process of a freshly saw lumber. These solution are what being address in the proposal



Urban Scenario 2 - Temporarity and Sharing (Short-time)
In order to maximize the use of the limited space, sharing of equipment such as lift, drying kiln, and movable raft-platform is the best way to minimize the redundancy of equipment and also promote communal interaction between occupant of the area. The space tectonic of the building is conceive in a way which it can be adapt to certain activities during different period of a day

                

Urban Scenario 3 - Engagement and Public Involvement
In order to appeal to the wider array of audience, promotion of the area and its incorporate activities should be held. I envision the place to flexible enough so events such as maker fair, trade show, or other craft related event will be held to promote and draw in people to be interested and ultimately would continue to preserve the craft. 


Urban Scenario 4 - Customization and Evolution
Apart from vertical growth to accommodate the ever-increasing need of living space, alternative means such as canal house and floating rate house are being proposed to maximized the space utilization. By promoting the area as a community of artisan and craftsman, the area could potentially draw in craft people from all over Bangkok to continue practice their skill within this urban environment

For the chapter III of Urban Manufacturer II, we diverge for a different approach in design via the process of creating series of physical model which depict scenarios and occurrences of the proposed situations. The aim is to learn and be familiarized with the materiality of our selected material from the productive process, in this case, wood.


These collection of physical environments are a representation of the possible urban scenarios which are possible in relation to the incorporation of wood and its related processes into our urban environment. The topics in which they cover are ranged from the re-introduction of traditional process, energy, engagement, to living.


PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT 1 - Reintroduction 


- Reintroduction of traditional processes: Saw-mil, Water-based transportation
- Miniaturization and adaptation of the process into a confined urban context
- Introduce a new urban storage solution


PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT 2 - Energy

 

- Efficient energy solution for sustainable and ecological practice
- Introduction of the notion of shared common facilities in oppose to individually-own to decrease space consumption


PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT 3 - Engagement


- The creation of more open space which initial a more open atmosphere for interaction
- The notion of public space and shared space
- Technical development to create a more efficient space of working

- Introduction of alternative mean of living
- Showcasing of additional process which can occur

CHAPTER: II

For this subsequent chapter of UM II, speculative stimuli is added into the current urban condition. The aim is to open and promote the production process and create an atmosphere that connect the user back to the processes.

To cope with the ever-changing conditions such as climate change, increase of global population and the soaring demand for habitable space. The reintroduction of wood as a construction material and utilization in urban environment will play a crucial role in displacing current fundamental material such as concrete and steel. Wood is one of a few material which is replenish-able and can be easily re purpose or reuse.


 In order to comply with the contemporary building standard, engineered wood products such as glue-laminated timber (glulam) or cross-laminated timber (CLT) will by partly utilize in structural components to improve the efficiency and further expand building capacities forward. Additionally, these products also utilize leftover and by products while further reduced the environmental footprint as a whole. Nevertheless, in order to preserve and hearken back to the traditional crafts, the facade panels or other highly detailed part will remain to be create by craftsman to create a balance between technology and craftsmanship.




Also, the neglected canal on the back side of the chophouses will be further developed into additional working space and a communal zone for the resident of the area. 


To fully create a sustainable cycle of production, a source of timer should only arrived from a sustainably managed resources. Method such as 'Agroforestry' will be one of the model implement to supply the increasing demand in wood. Agroforestry can be defined as a process where tree to be harvest as timber is planted alongside row of agricultural crop to create a symbiotic benefits. Tree specie such as Acacia Mangium(Kratin) is specially selected because its properties of fast growing, medium-light weight, high strength to weight ratio, soil nourishing are perfect to serve this part.

For the opening phase of UMII, we are focusing on analyzing productive activities via research and observation which would eventually culminate into series of photographs and spatial diagrams; specifically crafted to illustrated different aspect of that particular activities. In this case, the network of wood-related activities in the surrounding area of Saket Temple (Golden Mountain) is the main subject of focus.
These series of photographs and diagrams depict several characteristics of the selected activities. For examples; The dominant typologies, Living and working conditions, historical background, network and symbiotic activities, emerging drifts, contextual analysis and so forth.
