Let’s face it! One man’s thrash is another man’s treasure! Tackling waste, let alone food waste has always been a pending global issue. But Yaowarat has evolved into one of the world’s most effective place which tackles food waste. Situated at the end of the food cycle, waste management is often an issue easily avoided. But if one could see that waste is the future’s gold, then essentially one could transform landfills into other potential forms.

Unique as the markets are which Yaowarat possesses, the trick here is not to remove these markets, but rather preserved these characteristics which ensure a vivacious Yaowarat. The deal’s done! Yaowarat will encapsulate the notion of gastronomy, by embracing raw material production such as urban farming and the concept of food waste management. Capitalizing on Yaowarat’s existing shophouse infrastructure, urban farming will kick start within these shophouses. As for waste management, its mechanism will manifest those underused high rise buildings. Spanning across 50 years, this food utopia will be divided into 5 stages. With the first stage tackling raw materials production and food waste management, the second stage would be to brainstorm on preserving existing market structures.

With the growth of urban farming, it will fuel raw materials production for the sales of these markets. Hence, the idea of inculcating the sales of local products will be nurtured. By elevating ground floor markets to upper levels, it will provide more space for existing markets to expand. Food processing mechanisms will be the third stage of this food utopia as it aims to manage raw materials being produced. These infrastructures could be shared across different markets. Following a change to ends of the food spectrum, the idea of constructing a new generation of food cart will be governed by creative technologies such as 3D printing. Thus, stage four aims to realize the possibility of customizability of food carts, by establishing an affordable technological system for street hawkers.One of the main outcomes of this food utopia is to enable individual street hawker to realize their ability to expand their own business, hence exemplifying the notion of a nomadic street food culture.
