"Commercial Contemporary"
1,Changchui Plane NIght Market
2,EmQuartier
3,New World Mall

I did research on "Commercial contemporary" in Bangkok.
  • This category brings together private areas with public utility. These large spaces are extensions of the public space where there is a strong activity of Thai people.
  • Shopping mall and markets are places of social exchanges between the local population and tourists.
I introduce about these places below.

1,Changchui Plane Night Market

This night market opened very recently welcomes various sellers and artists of Bangkok. Inside this very verdant space you can find severals pieces of sculpture or wrecks of vehicles with unusual gaits. At the heart of the market is the silver fuselage of a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, a big plane which is being transformed into a dinning room and bar. The name Changchui means “so careless”. ChangChui is made of many small buildings built with old wood windows and doors. This walking market is the creation of Somchai  Lim.

Location: 462 Sirindhorn Rd, Khwaeng Bang Phlat, Khet Bang Phlat, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon
Opened every day 4-11PM

2,EmQuartier

EmQuartier Bangkok is a unique shopping mall with an atrium garden complete with a waterfall. It’s based on a spiral form, the ramps that start from the fifth floor ensure a continuity of the walk for the consumers. The Helix Quartier has a 100-long rainforest and a central atrium area. On the fith floor, the Quartier Water Garden is like an arboretum with tropical atmosphere and bird sounds. There is multitude of various plants of tropical forest to teach children about their environment. It looks like the “jungle of Sukhumvit“.

Location: 695 Sukhumvit Road, Watthana, Bangkok
Opened every day 10AM-10PM

3,New World Mall

This abandoned shopping mall was built in the 80s in the Banglupmhu district. The mall was forced to close in 1997 and it caught fire in 1999. During the rainy season of Bangkok, the building flooded and there was stagnant water in the floorgrouund of the shopping mall. This stagnant water was the perfect place for the proliferation of mosquitoes. Local people have found the solution by puting fishes in this artificial basin. So Fish such as Koi carp were put into the flooded building to keep the Mosquitos under control. Protected from every predators, the fish have reproduced exponentially.  The building was officially closed to the public in 2011.

Location: Soi Kraisi, Talat Yot, Phra Nakhon, Bangkok
